‘Freo’ is a sophisticated and remarkable port and
tourist town 18 km s-w of Perth.
Interesting historic buildings, elegant hotels and
countless cafés & restaurants balance the
industrial area around the docks. Established in 1929
by Capt Fremantle as a whaling and fishing
settlement, the arrival of British convicts in 1850
helped boost the population and construction in the
area. Fremantle Gaol, Fremantle Arts Centre and
History Museum were all convict built. The 1980s saw
Fremantle become one of Australia’s premier tourist
destinations particularly after the 1983 America’s
Cup yachting victory which resulted in the city
hosting the following race in 1987.
AccommodationFremantle has over half
a dozen hotels, many B&Bs and holiday apartments
and 3 caravan parks.
